The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) has announced that the start of voter registration in ten (10) municipalities in the 1st District of Ilocos Sur will be moved to July 1, 2011 as the poll body is set to conduct a special election in the district on May 28, 2011.
In Resolution No. 9193, promulgated April 14, 2011 by the COMELEC en banc, the poll body said “in order to give ample time to carry out the pre-election and post-election activities in the First Congressional District of Ilocos Sur, there is a need to reset the resumption of the system of continuing registration of voters…”
The COMELEC also cited Section 8 of Republic Act No. 8189 which states that no registration of voters shall be conducted within ninety (90) days before a special election, as a reason for the deferment.
COMELEC Spokesman James Jimenez said the ten (10) Ilocos Sur municipalities are the following:
1.Bantay
2.Cabugao
3.Caoayan
4.Magsingal
5.San Ildefonso
6.San Juan
7.San Vicente
8.Sta. Catalina
9.Sinait
10.Vigan City
Meanwhile, voters’ registration in Barangay Milagrosa, Project 4 in Quezon City’s 3rd District shall likewise be reset from May 3, 2011 to June 15, 2011, said Jimenez.
The reason for the deferment, the COMELEC spokesman said, is the conduct of an Initiative in Barangay Milagrosa on May 14, 2011.
The COMELEC, in Resolution No. 9168, dated March 22, 2011, has set the period of the resumption of the system of continuing voter registration in Non-ARMM areas nationwide from May 3, 2011 until October 31, 2012. ###
