Some 108 leaders and assistant leaders of gangs, pseudo fraternities and fraternities existing in Makati yesterday underwent a workshop on peace and order conducted by the Liga ng mga Barangay Affairs Office (LBAO) of the Makati city government.
LBAO executive director Constancia Lichauco said the one-day workshop intends to counteract the increasing number of gangs, pseudo fraternities and fraternities, some of which have become breeding grounds for lawless elements who pose a threat to residents and the general public.
Mayor Jejomar C. Binay commended the LBAO for coming up with this worthy undertaking.
He said this activity would help guide and transform the leaders and members of these organized groups into productive and responsible citizens of Makati.
“I am confident that the workshop will come up with concrete, effective and efficient programs that will regulate, if not eliminate altogether, the participation of minors in organized groups engaged in crime and bad vices,” Binay said.
Lichauco said the workshop topics included education, skills training and livelihood, environmental management, crime prevention and law enforcement, anti-illegal drugs, and sports development.
She said in the latter part of the workshop, the participants were able to identify issues and concerns of several gangs and fraternities, after which they mapped out possible solutions to address such problems.
Based on the latest data submitted by the Makati Police Department, there are around 76 OSY gangs and fraternities in the city to date.
According to LBAO, all of them have shown interest in the programs being offered by the city government to achieve a peaceful community.
