MALACAÑANG said on Tuesday that administration standard-bearer Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro may not have won in the presidential race, but he has made his mark in the country’s political history by anchoring his campaign on “substance and decency.”
Deputy Presidential Spokesman Gary Olivar said in a statement that the administration is proud of the way Teodoro strove to win the highest office in the land.
“We are proud that the administration party’s standard -bearer staked out the moral high ground all to himself with the way he ran his campaign. Win or lose, his contribution of substance and decency to the electoral exercise was unique and has already entered into our nation’s history,” Olivar said.
Deputy Presidential Spokesman Rogelio Peyuan said Teodoro’s concession to Aquino is “a very honorable act on the part of former Secretary Teodoro both in his capacity as the administration presidential candidate and as a relative of the leading Liberal Party candidate.”
“That will be good for the Lakas-Kampi party [members] who should all be a part of the much needed genuine national reconciliation,” Peyuan said.
Peyuan said in a news briefing that the Arroyo administration is “saddened” by Teodoro’s loss.
He said, however, that Teodoro’s poor showing in the polls should not be blamed on his association with President Arroyo, who has been hounded by record-low public-approval ratings.
Asked whether Teodoro’s loss was a reflection of the President’s unpopularity, Peyuan said, “Not at all...we did our part and that is distinct and separate from how the administration candidate presented himself. There are no apologies, no sorrys because...the people had participated, listened and watched everything, and so there goes the decision.”
As for some former Cabinet officials who are not seen to fare well in their respective political pursuits, based on the latest election returns, Peyuan said this could be due to the lack of time to campaign.
Meanwhile, Cabinet officials congratulated Arroyo for her successful bid in the congressional race in the Second District of Pampanga, during the full Cabinet meeting on Tuesday.
