A member of the academe has considered Lakas-Kampi CMD presidential candidate Gilberto “Gibo” Teodoro Jr. as the country’s best hope in the May 10 elections, saying he possesses the qualities of a competent leader fortified with a sense of nationalism and integrity.
Bro. Rolando “Rolly” Dizon, FSC, former president of the De La Salle University (DLSU), wrote in a letter read by Ernesto Maceda, Teodoro’s classmate in high school, that the former defense chief is a morally upright person untainted with any anomaly while in government service.
"As I see and hear your (Teodoro’s) name, I am increasingly convinced that you really are the best candidate for president," said Dizon said in his letter. Dizon retired from DLSU last year after he was diagnosed with cancer.
Teodoro, accompanied by his wife Rep. Nikki Prieto-Teodoro of Tarlac, attended a fund-raising campaign at the Manila Polo Club in Makati initiated by his former classmates at DLSU and Xavier School to propel his campaign for the presidential race.
A huge crowd of business leaders, former school mates and supporters joined the event.
"If I may offer unsolicited advice from one La Sallian to another, visit major colleges and universities as this would start a bandwagon for other sectors,” Dizon said, adding that Teodoro should focus his efforts for the country’s youth.
"I pray that with God's help and a good campaign directed mainly at the youth, you can overcome the odds and become the next president that we badly need," said Dizon, who also served as chairman of the Commission on Higher Education and member of the Consultative Commission on Charter Change.
Teodoro finished pre-law at DLSU-Manila before going to law school at the University of the Philippines and Harvard University.
He topped the Bar examinations in 1989.
In the invocation in Tuesday's event, Fr. Jimmy Cegun said that it is rare in Philippine history that voters get a chance to pick a candidate as qualified, competent and with such an unblemished reputation as Teodoro.
Acknowledging the outpouring of support, Teodoro said Filipino voters want to see genuine change in national leadership. "With what has transpired tonight, with your commitment, we have won.
It is for us to lose only if we lose the moorings, the ideals and the commitment for a principled and true change," he said.
He reiterated his “vision of a Philippines on a par with its neighbors or even leading the region.”
