MANILA, Philippines - Banning provincial passenger buses and jeepneys on EDSA has long been a plan of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, MMDA chairman Bayani Fernando today (Aug. 23) disclosed.
Fernando said the plan is difficult to implement as there are no common terminals in the northern and southern parts of the metropolis.
"Mahirap gawin yan kasi kailangan pa ring maghakot ng pasahero sa terminal sa loob ng kalunsuran," he said in his weekly radio program.
He said there should be at least three common terminals where people can go to get a ride going to the provinces.
In Marikina City, Fernando said a common terminal has buses going to Bicol using the C-5 route.
Fernando said the MMDA had planned to make the property under the Magallanes flyover into a tranfer point in the south.
"Napakagandang transfer point yun kasi dun [nag-aabot] ang jeep at yung PNR [Philippine National Railways] train," Fernando said.
The plan to totally ban buses on Edsa was recently proposed by Land Transportation Franchising Regulatory Board chairman Alberto Suasing.
Suasing also wants to reduce the number of buses plying the Edsa route by at least 2,000 units.
